About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate ParaProfessional to join our team. As a ParaProfessional - Special Education Signing Assistant, you will work closely with special education teachers to support students with a variety of mild to severe physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. Your primary duties will include assisting teachers in implementing students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs), preparing lesson plans and materials, and providing basic classroom services for special needs students.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist special education teachers in the special education program, including implementing students' IEPs, preparing lesson plans and materials, and administering diagnostic, skills, and level testing.
- Assist students with classroom and homework assignments, tutoring, or other supplemental instruction, as well as socialization, personal hygiene, medications, and physical therapy, nutritional, and related personal tasks as needed.
- Assist regular classroom teachers by preparing, modifying, and adapting classroom presentations and materials to assigned students, as well as assisting with classroom activities, classroom management, lesson plans, grading papers, clerical and record-keeping duties, creating and updating reports and files, and other documentation, as directed.
- Perform substitute teacher duties in the absence of the teacher, as well as assist with clerical duties, including copying, inputting records and data into a computer, faxing, text and document preparation, and related duties.
- Maintain the classroom in a clean, neat, and orderly status, prepares bulletin boards and displays, and maintains classroom supply levels.
- Assist with student supervision on field trips and related extracurricular activities, as well as perform school grounds, bus, noon, and other monitoring and safety duties, as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- College or other advanced education or training is preferred.
- Classroom or other instructional experience is preferred.
- Experience with special needs children is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have:
- A bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.
- Experience working with students with mild to severe physical, emotional, and learning disabilities.
- Knowledge of special education methods and procedures, as well as basic educational procedures and objectives.
Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, you will need to possess:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other staff members.
- Ability to interpret and modify classroom instructions, materials, and presentations to the appropriate learning level of the assigned student.
- Ability to prepare and provide basic classroom services for special needs students, including instruction, tutoring, student evaluation, lesson plans, curriculum implementation, materials preparation, and classroom management.
- Ability to maintain a calm personal demeanor and remain focused in situations of high stress.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and return to and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to prepare and maintain required records, files, reports, logs, statistics, and documentation.
- Ability to operate classroom instructional equipment and basic office equipment, including a personal computer.
