Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced and qualified Itinerant Special Education Teacher to provide special education services to students in our district. As an itinerant teacher, you will travel to various schools and sites to provide direct services to students, develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs), and collaborate with other educators and parents. This is a full-time position, and the successful candidate will be expected to work with students, parents, and staff to ensure that students receive high-quality special education services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain special classes or services for disabled students
  • Provide direct services to identified students, including academic testing and support
  • Prepare plans and materials for classroom visits and submit weekly plans to supervisor
  • Maintain a monthly calendar of scheduled classroom visits and provide documentation of changes to scheduled plans
  • Plan and coordinate Child Find activities with sites and the director/supervisor
  • Perform testing for Child Find at designated sites (DIAL screening) by October 1st of each year
  • Provide suggestions and coordinate pre-referral services for students
  • Interpret IEP plans and eligibility to parents and others involved in the child's educational needs
  • Maintain current paperwork on students, including IEPs, ESERs, and other necessary documentation
  • Collect data on IEP goals and attend IEP meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field
  • Valid teaching certification in Special Education (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience working with students with diverse needs, particularly in a rural or remote setting
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel to various schools and sites, often in remote areas
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to drive

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Special Education or related field
  • Experience with IEP development and implementation
  • Familiarity with Alaska state regulations and policies related to special education
  • Experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Certification in a specific area of special education (e.g., autism, learning disabilities)
