Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-11-24
The Penguin Random House Christian Publishing Group, which includes the flagship imprints of WaterBrook & Multnomah, is in growth mode and looking to hire our next Editorial Director. We publish a broad range of Christian authors including John Mark Comer, Mark Batterson, Michael Todd, Jordan Lee Dooley, Jennie Allen, Manny Arango, Ashley Hetherington, Madison Prewett Troutt, Dr. Sarita Lyons, Angela Halili and Arielle Reitsma, Rich Villodas, Katie Davis Majors, Stephanie Ike Okafor, and Joni Eareckson Tada. The Editorial Director will work with the Publisher to set the nonfiction editorial priorities for the publishing list, from identifying and pursuing the authors and books that will help define the future of the division's adult trade program, to targeting opportunities in both established and emerging categories that play to the division's strengths and extend them. In setting such priorities, you will take a leading role in shaping a program that speaks to, and is representative of, the concerns and interests of Christian readers. A typical day may involve timely acquisitions reads; nurturing author and agent relationships; reviewing P&Ls; giving input on titles/subtitles, cover design, and jacket copy; joining acquisition calls and marketing discussions; and numerous other meetings and tasks. An understanding of healthy publishing markers, an ability to identify strong editorial content, skill in navigating complex situations, and a problem-solving mindset are all crucial to success. The following are some, though not all, of your responsibilities: • Oversee, mentor and lead the editorial team, comprised of 8 members of varying levels of experience • In coordination with the Publisher, assess potential value of all non-fiction projects, craft P&Ls, and formulate acquisitions requests • Acquire 5-7 titles per year • Develop and maintain strong author and agent connections • Foster a highly collaborative workplace culture that includes remote team members • Collaborate with the Publisher to optimize communication with multiple departments and teams including Design, Production, Publicity, Marketing, and Sales • Serve as a key ambassador for the group, articulating its mission and building relationships with our many colleagues and external partners in the Christian space • Consult with the art, production, and managing editorial departments on schedule, design, and packaging of books • Keep abreast of trends and competitive titles • Some travel is required for this role, including travel for acquisition networking, team meetings, and team-building activities. Candidates must be flexible and willing to travel as needed, typically 1-2 trips per quarter. Given the vital impact this role has on our overall program, we are looking for you to match the following qualifications: • 7-10 years + editorial experience with at least 3 years management experience • Deep editorial background in books or other content-rich media spaces • Proven familiarity with the nuances of the Christian marketplace • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks on a regular basis, balancing deadlines with a focus on standard of quality and key relationships • Roving curiosity for new voices and ideas and breaking trends (with staying power) • Entrepreneurial spirit and drive necessary to channel innovation into book form We are keen to hear in a cover letter why you're putting yourself forward for this role with the Penguin Random House Christian Publishing Group. Apply now and share how you will aim to steer us toward continued success as we enter the next stage of expansion. Candidates must have a minimum of 7-10 years book editorial experience and a solid track record of shaping commercially successful books in the Christian space. They also must have knowledge of competition and the non-fiction marketplace. Strong negotiation skills are an asset. Salary for this position is $100,000 - $120,000. Candidates with more than 10 years' experience acquiring and publishing commercially successful adult non-fiction titles will be eligible for a salary in the range of $120,000 - $135,000. Applications will be accepted through January 22nd. Please apply using our online application process and include a resume and cover letter with salary requirements.
