Marketing and Operations Coordinator
Position Type: Part-time, hours vary seasonally
10 - 25 hours per week May through October
2 - 10 hours per week November through April
Compensation: $21.00 - $23.00/hour + $75 monthly health insurance and technology
Reports to: Market Manager
Location: Hybrid (on-site during market days; remote for administrative work)

Start Date: Flexible, but ideally the first or second week of March. The first at-market training opportunity is at our indoor winter market on Saturday, March 14.
Mission: Neighborhood Roots operates the Southwest, Kingfield, & Nokomis Farmers Markets in South Minneapolis. Our mission is to bring neighbors together to buy, eat, and learn about local food. We support local farmers, promote vibrant community and locally owned businesses, and affect important changes in food and agriculture policy.
Overview: The Marketing & Operations Coordinator supports the successful operation and promotion of Neighborhood Roots’ farmers markets. Working in close collaboration with the Market Manager, Development Manager, and market day staff, this role plays a key part in ensuring markets run smoothly, feel welcoming, and are well-promoted throughout the season.This is a hybrid role that blends on-site market leadership with behind the scenes marketing and communications work.
On market days, the Coordinator serves as a visible, supportive point of contact for vendors, volunteers, and community members, helping ensure smooth operations, a welcoming atmosphere, and adherence to market policies and regulations. Off-site, the Coordinator leads digital marketing and communications efforts, creating engaging content that highlights vendors, promotes market programs and events, and reflects the values and voice of Neighborhood Roots.
This role is built for someone who enjoys a blend of hands-on and creative work. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable managing logistics in a busy outdoor setting and telling meaningful stories about food, farmers, and community.

Hours for this position include time before, during, and after the hours the markets are open to the public, plus up to 10 hours weekly of administrative time. Shifts at markets are 7-8 hours long, and include time for market set up, open hours, and tear down. Non-market administrative hours are remote. The Operations Coordinator can use a personal device for admin tasks and receive a monthly technology stipend. If the need for a personal device is a barrier, one can be provided.
The Market Manager and Operations Coordinator will set a collaborative work schedule in advance of the start of the season. Candidates are not expected to have availability for every market day, but ideally are able to work at all three locations on a regular basis. Beyond that, scheduling is flexible. At-market hours will be spent outdoors in varying weather conditions. The markets are open rain or shine. This is a physical job: staff members need to be able to stand, walk, and be active for extended periods of time. Market set up and break down involve repetitive lifting of 20-30 lb and occasional lifting of 60+ lb.
Essential Functions:
Market Operations:
• Serves as a point of contact for vendors and volunteers on market days
• Lays out stalls, manages timely vendor load in and load out processes and market equipment/infrastructure
• Manages info booth and merchandise sales, including EBT/SNAP and market tokens sales and collection process
• Assists with record keeping and data collection
• Ensures market rules are followed, along with state and local health codes
• Provides on-site support to vendors, patrons, musicians, artists, volunteers and other community providers as needed
• Assists with planning and facilitating programming including;
• Power of Produce Club activities
• Market sampling/cooking demonstrations
• Ensures timely and effective set up and clean up of market equipment and sites
• Supervises and trains seasonal market staff and volunteers
• Support Nourishing Neighbors gleaning and record keeping at the end of markets
• Other reasonable duties as assigned to support the Market Manager and general market operations
Administrative Tasks:
Marketing Focused:
• Work closely with Board members and fellow staff to align marketing efforts with overall market goals
• Develop and publish digital marketing content to promote market days, vendors, special events, and market programs
• Create engaging content for social media (Instagram, Facebook, newsletters, website updates, and other platforms as needed)
• Write clear, warm, and inclusive copy that reflects the market’s values and voice
• Coordinate vendor spotlights, product features, and behind-the-scenes storytelling
• Track basic marketing metrics (engagement, reach, attendance trends) and suggest improvements
• Maintain and organize marketing assets (photos, templates, brand guidelines)
• Assist with creating and distributing signage, flyers, posters, and other on-site or print marketing materials
• Lift up vendors’ marketing efforts through cross-posting and collaboration
Vendor Support:
• Serve as a friendly, visible point of contact for vendors
• Assist Market Manager on vendor application and scheduling processes
• Advises vendors on marketing best practices
• Develop rapport with vendors to better market their business and products
Required Characteristics and Qualifications:
• Experience with social media and marketing
• Proficiency with Meta Business Suite, Google applications, and Canva or similar design software
• Able to balance autonomous and collaborative work
• Positive, punctual, organized, strong problem solving ability
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to promoting and advancing diversity and equity
• Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions (hot/cold/rain/wind/etc)
• Able to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs, and repetitively lift 20-30 lb.
• Interest in sustainable agriculture, food justice, and food systems work
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Food Systems, or related field, or equivalent relevant experience
• Event coordination and project management experience
• Experience working with farmers, food businesses, and/or non-profit organizations
• Experience working with volunteers
• Fundraising experience
