Position Overview: The Sr. Risk Analyst – Market Risk serves as a key contributor to Motiva’s independent risk oversight function by designing, enhancing, and maintaining quantitative risk measures, KRIs, and analytical tools that strengthen commercial decision‑making. This role combines traditional market‑risk controllership with advanced quantitative analysis to enable more effective hedging, deeper risk insight, and disciplined risk governance. This position is well‑suited for a practitioner who is highly inquisitive, hypothesis‑driven, and commercially grounded. The Specialist will regularly develop and test new risk metrics, evaluate potential hedging strategies, and distill complex market dynamics into actionable insights for trading, supply optimization, and senior leadership. This is an on‑site position with hybrid flexibility, located at Motiva’s downtown Houston corporate headquarters. and operates on a 9/80 work schedule, providing alternating Fridays off to support work–life balance. Responsibilities • Develop and maintain advanced market risk measures, stress tests, scenario frameworks, and KRIs aligned with Motiva’s commercial exposures. • Build analytical tools and repeatable models (Python / Power BI / ETRM) to enhance the accuracy and transparency of market risk reporting. • Partner with Supply Optimization and the Hedge Desk to evaluate hedge performance and support improvements in hedge execution and design. • Test hypotheses for new hedging opportunities using historical simulations, factor analysis, and stress‑scenario frameworks. • Quantitatively assess the risk–reward profile of new strategies, structures, and derivative instruments. • Monitor hedge effectiveness and identify opportunities to strengthen hedging programs and structures. • Publish risk reporting—including exposure, P&L, limits, and KRIs—and escalate breaches or anomalies per policy. • Maintain rigorous documentation, audit trails, and transparent model methodologies. • Maintain a high‑level but meaningful understanding of market fundamentals across crude, refined products, and key spreads. • Link fundamental drivers to factor exposures, vol surfaces, forward curves, structure, and correlation patterns. • Communicate insights on rapidly evolving market conditions that may affect Motiva’s risk posture or hedging strategy. • Contribute to ETRM data integrity through validation, troubleshooting, and reconciliation routines. • Participate in risk‑analytics system enhancements, including model implementation, UAT testing, and automation initiatives. • Develop data pipelines and repeatable analytics to improve efficiency and transparency across Middle Office processes. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, or a related quantitative field. • Minimum of 5 years of experience in market risk, middle office, or commodity analytics. • Strong understanding of inventory/profitability concepts, exposure measurement, and derivative valuation. • Experience with commodities such as crude, intermediates, refined products, renewables, or petrochemicals. • Proficiency with ETRM systems (RightAngle preferred) and analytical tools such as Power BI and Excel. • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate drivers, trends, and risk impacts. • Working understanding of logistics, including pipeline, marine/vessel, rail, and truck movements. • Advanced proficiency in exposure decomposition (flat, spread, basis) and limits/DOA controls. • Strong capability in presenting insights and leading cross‑functional resolution of discrepancies. Nice-to-haves • Master’s degree or relevant certifications (CFA, FRM, ERP). • Experience supporting ETRM implementations or enhancing risk‑analytics platforms. • Knowledge of VaR/@Risk, stress testing, scenario analysis, and structured‑deal risk assessment. • Prior experience in refining and understanding the full lifecycle of a commodity transaction. • Experience with crack‑spread margin management and corporate hedging programs. • Experience leading new‑activity enablement initiatives.
