Genetic Counselor - Research; Genetic Medicine
Position: Genetic Counselor - Research (Genetic Medicine)
The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a part time Board Certified or Board Eligible Genetic Counselor - Research to conduct genomics or ELSI research and participate in research training and education.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
• Develops and implements genomic medicine or ELSI research project(s) with input from mentors and supervisors.
• Responsible for day-to-day management of primary research study including compliance with human subject's considerations and best practices for research data management.
• May assist in the management of research studies of research team members, including protocol development, providing subject matter expertise, preparation of education materials, and review and revision of manuscripts.
• Takes research courses annually. Completes the Rigor and Reproducibility in Research and Fundamentals of Genetic Counseling Research course in the year of hire.
• Develops at least one research-focused webinar, discussion forum, or conference session for a genetics meeting.
• Provides guidance and expertise in specialty areas to others.
• Develops and maintains cooperative and positive working relationships with team members and faculty.
• Participates in DGM educational activities.
• May provide guidance and general supervision to genetic counseling students and/or undergraduate students participating in research.
• Contributes to grant proposal(s).
• Exhibits effective communication and documentation in a concise and logical manner.
• Attends and actively participates in research conferences, seminars, journal clubs, lab meetings, and other JHU meetings as assigned.
• Develops and delivers presentations at genomics/genetics/ELSI focused local, regional, and national journal clubs, seminars, and research meetings.
• Identifies issues and takes on a leadership role to conduct process review in collaboration with team.
• Contributes to new initiatives within the department/institution.
• Works with others of different backgrounds and specialties on professional committees and task forces.
• Participates in at least one (1) publication annually.
• Understands and communicates the mission of the department and Johns Hopkins Medicine and contribute to the positive image of Johns Hopkins Medicine on a national/international scale.
• Makes adjustments to self to positively accept and manage change.
• Performs miscellaneous related duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master's Degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
• Must seek (and maintain) certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within one year of hire date.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
• One year genetic counseling experience, with experience in general pediatric or adult genetics clinic.
• Exposure to genetics / genetic counseling research
• Valid ABGC Board certification or board eligibility required.
