Data Analyst (Founding Role) — Build Our Reporting & Analytics System from Scratch
Title: Data Analyst (Founding / First Analytics Hire)
Type: Full-time
Experience: 2–6+ years (flexible based on demonstrated ownership)
About the Role
We’re hiring our first Data Analyst to build the company’s analytics and reporting function from the ground up. This is a high-ownership role: you’ll define what we measure, where the data lives, how it flows, and how we deliver reliable, automated reporting that teams can trust.
If you enjoy turning messy, fragmented data into clean dashboards and automated reports—and setting up a scalable foundation for future analytics—this role is for you.
What You’ll Do
Set Up the Analytics Foundation (from zero)
• Lead the end-to-end setup of our data and reporting system: data discovery → integration → modeling → dashboards → automation
• Identify and document all business-critical data points across teams (e.g., sales, operations, finance, product, customer support)
• Define a metrics dictionary (single source of truth) including definitions, formulas, owners, and update frequency
Connect & Consolidate Data from Multiple Tools
• Connect and extract data from the different software platforms we use (examples: CRM, accounting, e-commerce, project management, customer support, inventory/ERP, marketing tools)
• Build and maintain reliable data pipelines using APIs, connectors, webhooks, exports, or ELT tools
• Ensure data is clean, consistent, and reconcilable across sources (deduping, mapping IDs, handling missing values)
Build Automated Reports & Dashboards
• Create automated, self-serve dashboards and scheduled reports for key stakeholders
• Design reporting that is:
• Accurate (validated numbers, reproducible logic)
• Timely (automated refresh schedules)
• Actionable (clear KPIs, trends, exceptions, and drill-downs)
• Own recurring reporting deliverables (weekly/monthly business reviews, performance tracking, operational reporting)
Improve Data Quality & Governance
• Put basic governance in place: access control, documentation, versioning, and auditability
• Set up QA checks and monitoring to detect broken pipelines or anomalous values
• Recommend tooling and best practices as we scale
What We’re Looking For (Must-Haves)
• Strong SQL skills (joins, CTEs, window functions, performance awareness)
• Proven experience building reporting/analytics systems using data from multiple tools/sources
• Comfort working with APIs, exports, and messy datasets (you can “find the truth”)
• Experience with BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Metabase, Mode, Superset)
• Ability to translate business questions into:
• measurable metrics
• data requirements
• automated reports that stakeholders actually use
• Strong ownership and communication: you can work independently and align teams on definitions
Nice to Have
• Python (pandas), dbt, or strong spreadsheet modeling skills
• Experience with ELT/ETL tools (Fivetran, Stitch, Airbyte, Zapier, Make, etc.)
• Data warehouse experience (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, PostgreSQL)
• Familiarity with basic statistics, forecasting, cohort analysis, funnel analysis
• Experience setting up data governance/metric definitions in a growing company
What Success Looks Like (First 60–90 Days)
• You’ve mapped our current tools and identified key datasets and gaps
• Core KPI definitions are documented and agreed upon (single source of truth)
• Automated pipelines are pulling data into a central location (warehouse or structured database)
• We have reliable dashboards/reports for leadership and key teams with scheduled refreshes
• Stakeholders stop “manually compiling reports” and start trusting live dashboards
Why This Role Is Different
• You’re not joining an existing analytics team—you’re building the foundation
• You’ll have real influence over tooling, data architecture, and reporting standards
• Your work will directly impact decision-making across the company
• Growth: This role can evolve into Analytics Lead / Data & Insights Manager as we scale
