Department: R&D Location: Palo Alto, CA Workplace Type: Onsite The Senior Engineer, System Design will work both independently and collaboratively to design, implement, and evaluate engineering solutions that support new product and technology development, as well as process and infrastructure improvements. Key Responsibilities System Architecture & Documentation: Develop, author, and maintain detailed system requirements, architecture, and design documentation for new products and technologies. System Integration: Define subsystem specifications and interfaces; collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams on implementation and verification. Testing & Validation: Develop system-level testing methods, author test protocols, guide and execute system tests, and prepare comprehensive test reports. Risk Analysis: Support hazard analysis and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) for systems and subsystems. Compliance & Standards: Ensure compliance to medical device standards (IEC 60601, IEC 62304, FDA, MDR, ISO 14971, ISO 13485). Coordinate EMC and safety testing with external laboratories. Traceability & Quality: Create and maintain a comprehensive traceability matrix in Jama. Interface with QA and RA teams to align on system design strategy. Technical Reviews: Prepare, present, and defend technical reviews of system design work; contribute to peer reviews of team deliverables. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with marketing, quality, regulatory, and operations throughout planning, development, verification, and production phases. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field, Master’s degree is a plus. Minimum 5 years of experience developing complex instrumentation and equipment, including RF electronics and embedded real-time control systems. Experience with Class III medical capital equipment and familiarity with quality and regulatory requirements, standards, and documentation. Strong technical design background across electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, with expertise in system architecture and specification. Excellent communication, documentation, and technical writing skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively across technical disciplines to drive projects to completion. Expected Travel: 5% Salary Range: $123,750 - $165,000 (Annual Base Salary) The successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location and market conditions.
