The School of Art and Design provides a multidisciplinary approach to art and design that offers opportunities for students to develop their creative and critical thinking abilities by thinking through making. The School currently enrolls more than 500 students in twelve areas across four degrees. The School of Art and Design has the BFA in Art program in the University of North Carolina system, an impressive African art collection, and has been continuously accredited by NASAD since 1962. The School has over 40 full-time faculty and is located in Jenkins Fine Arts Center, a 142,000 square-foot facility with specialized equipment, tools, and technology for the School's 14 disciplines-animation/ interactive design, art education, art history, ceramics, film and video production, glass, graphic design, illustration, metal design, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and textile design. From computer labs, digital looms, CNC router, and laser cutters to a woodshop, foundry, letterpress shop, black and white darkroom, and beyond, the School's facilities are comprehensive and available to faculty and students who think, make, and work across the School's disciplines.

Job Duties

The School of Art and Design (SoAD) at East Carolina University seeks a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor to teach Art History with a focus on the global majority, African diaspora, and/or African art history and/or African American art history. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate 1000-level survey art history courses to upper-level art history seminars, as well as graduate level courses for MFA in Art and MAEd in Art Education students. In addition to teaching, full-time faculty maintain their research/scholarship, mentor students, engage with other faculty, participate in various departmental activities, and serve the School, College, ECU, and our community.

The School of Art and Design offers the BFA and MFA in Art with a variety of concentrations, as well as a BFA and MAEd in Art Education. All disciplines foster experimentation and collaboration to enrich learning within the School. The School's Wellington B. Gray Gallery holds a significant collection of African Art with works ranging in origin, media (from textiles to wood carvings, to adornment), and age. ECU has a diverse student body, and the School of Art and Design is committed to reflecting that diversity in its staff and faculty. Art history courses support bachelor's and master's studio and art education students as well as the BA students in Multidisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Art Histories.

The candidate chosen for this position will teach 3 three-credit courses per semester. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Research and scholarship appropriate to the candidate's expertise
  • Collaborating with area faculty on curriculum development
  • Service to the area, the School, College, University, and the profession
  • Participate in promoting and recruiting students for the School of Art and Design
Contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Ph.D. or ABD in art history or related field with a focus on the global majority, African diaspora, and/or African or African American art history. All qualifying degrees should be from appropriately accredited institutions. ABD candidates will be appointed with the probationary term rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to his/her first reappointment
  • Evidence of potential for success in research/scholarship
