Traveling Dental Hygienists are responsible for:
  • Conducting oral health examinations on participants age 1 and older, which may include assessments of dental caries, periodontal disease and other oral-related conditions and diseases, such as edentulism and dental sealants
  • Collecting oral rinse from participants
  • Administering medical history screening questions to the participants and issue recommendations for care, when necessary
  • Participating in the quality assurance program and maintain the equipment required for the examination tasks
  • Following the prescribed study protocol and mandated infection control guidelines
  • Recording screening responses and test measurements on a laptop computer
  • Setting up/packing up the dental examination room, including packing, unpacking, and storing light equipment and supplies
  • Performing spirometry, audiometry, or vision measurements on participants after receiving appropriate training.
  • Attending project training, complete RTI required courses and certification by end of training
  • Following all procedures in the Manual of Procedures
  • Properly managing and maintaining dental and other assigned equipment, tablet, and supplies properly
  • Providing all completed forms to supervisor, as requested
  • Serving as back up to conduct other MEC exam data collection
  • This position involves lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Perform spirometry, audiometry, or vision measurements on participants after receiving appropriate training
  • Cross-trained as back up to conduct other MEC exam data collection
RTI International is seeking part time Traveling Registered Dental Hygienists on the NHANES Project.The Data Practice area within the Social, Statistical & Environmental Sciences (SSES) at RTI International has a future opening for a traveling Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) position for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).NHANES involves health examinations conducted in a Mobile Examination Center (MEC) from participants recruited by field staff. The position will be part of a small MEC team. The RDH will be responsible for conducting oral health assessments as well as other exams. The position will be crossed trained to complete additional data collection activities within their scope and qualifications (i.e., obtaining informed consent, complete blood pressure or body measurement measurements, collect oral rinse, conduct spirometry, audiometry or vision measurements). The RDH will function as the backup MEC team lead, responsible for managing the MEC staff team and coordinating the daily data collection schedule.Successful candidates will have good communication skills, particularly with children and parents. This position requires full-time continuous travel for up to 40 weeks a year, with the potential for more. In addition to the certifications and qualifications below, the candidate must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week while on travel, including evenings and weekends and be willing to commit to work for at least 1 year. The RDH will attend project training and be supervised by a MEC Task Leader.Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 21 years old
  • Must possess Associate's degree
  • Successfully complete the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE)
  • Have an active dental hygienist license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (one of the 50 states or District of Columbia)
  • Have a minimum 1 year of experience in a medical or dental facility
  • CPR certification or obtain CPR certification within the first 3 months of employment
  • Knowledge of standard dental safety procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relations with all study participants
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English, particularly with children and parents
  • Has basic computer proficiency (accessing internet and various project applications) and clerical skills
  • Good organizational skills with an eye to detail
  • Ability to be flexible in working assigned tasks
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications for Ideal Candidates:
  • 3 years of experience in a medical or dental facility
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for driving the MEC vehicles (38 feet in length and over 26,000 in weight) to various study locations
  • The initial data collection period is expected to be two years, from January 2025 through December 2026 and anticipated to continue at least until 2030.
  • On average, you will be on duty 40 hours per week for up to 38 weeks per year.
  • On average, you will be on duty 5 days each week based on the survey participant schedule.
  • The majority of this work is anticipated to be weekdays during daytime hours, between 7AM and 7PM driven by the data collection schedule. Staff are informed of the upcoming week’s schedule each Thursday.
Traveling Registered Dental Hygienists are required to complete all trainings which include:
  • Successfully pass project required trainings (a mix of virtual, online, and in-person.)
  • Virtual and Online trainings completed throughout prior to in-person training.
  • In-person training dates in Research Triangle Park, NC.
  • Refresher and mid-year trainings are expected.
  • Attendance at all trainings is mandatory.
  • Up to 80 hours of paid online/virtual training.
  • In-person training for up to 8 hours/day will be paid.
  • Travel per diem and accommodations will be covered for in-person training.
