Sr Coverage Counsel- Specialty (REMOTE)

Our National Claims Counsel office is looking for a Sr. Coverage Counsel- Specialty to join our growing team. Reporting to the Managing Counsel Claims Legal, Sr. Coverage Counsel - Specialty serves as legal counsel to Hanover's claim organization, focused primarily on providing legal opinions, advice and resolution strategies on coverage and extra-contractual issues arising from the company's insurance policies and coverage positions, with a focus on specialty claims-made coverage. This is a full-time, exempt role.
Responsibilities
• Research and provide legal advice and opinions to claims handlers on coverage issues arising from the company's insurance contracts, with a strong focus on specialty claims (e.g., management liability, EPLI, professional liability).
• Provide timely, appropriate, and actionable coverage opinions/advice on selected high complexity/exposure claims.
• Partner with claim handlers to develop strategies that optimally resolve coverage disputes.
• May manage selective coverage litigation brought by or against the Company (including declaratory judgment actions, extra-contractual bad-faith, and other claims related disputes).
• Review and approve proposed coverage actions brought on behalf of the company.
• Collaborate with underwriting and product areas to improve the Company's insurance products.
Requirements
• Significant experience preparing coverage opinions on claims-made insurance policies either in a law firm or in house for a property and casualty insurer required.
• Experience litigating insurance coverage and related bad faith disputes either in private practice or in house for a property and casualty insurer a plus.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team framework.
• Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to clearly articulate actionable legal advice.
• Computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook and keyboarding skills.
• Familiarity with legal principles and issues concerning E-Discovery.
• JD degree or equivalent.
• Admitted to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.
• Preferably 6 or more years of experience in practicing law in a law firm or in-house, a substantial portion of which involved property & casualty insurance coverage matters.
• Skilled at time management and organizing work.
