Engineer I
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is dedicated to environmental stewardship for the health of North Carolinians. The Engineer I position involves implementing the NPDES permitting program for municipal wastewater discharges and requires proficiency in data analysis and effective communication of regulatory information.
Responsibilities
- Develop/issue NPDES wastewater permits for moderately complex facilities
- Perform engineering review of proposed wastewater alternatives
- May perform water quality modeling
- Peer Review of other Engineer's draft permits
- Attend public hearings on permit issues and respond to questions from general public and regulated community
- Assist supervisor/unit with special projects
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficiency with computers, word processing software, and spreadsheets
- Ability to comprehend and properly interpret regulatory documents
- Ability to perform detailed review and analysis of documents and datasets
- Ability to evaluate data and identify relationships and trends conducive to system evaluation and improvement
- Ability to effectively communicate regulatory and technical information to a range of audiences
- NC Driver's License required
- Professional Engineer licensure/Engineer Intern certification is not required but is considered an asset
