The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is dedicated to environmental stewardship for the health of North Carolinians. The Engineer I position involves implementing the NPDES permitting program for municipal wastewater discharges and requires proficiency in data analysis and effective communication of regulatory information.


Responsibilities

  • Develop/issue NPDES wastewater permits for moderately complex facilities
  • Perform engineering review of proposed wastewater alternatives
  • May perform water quality modeling
  • Peer Review of other Engineer's draft permits
  • Attend public hearings on permit issues and respond to questions from general public and regulated community
  • Assist supervisor/unit with special projects

Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency with computers, word processing software, and spreadsheets
  • Ability to comprehend and properly interpret regulatory documents
  • Ability to perform detailed review and analysis of documents and datasets
  • Ability to evaluate data and identify relationships and trends conducive to system evaluation and improvement
  • Ability to effectively communicate regulatory and technical information to a range of audiences
  • NC Driver's License required
  • Professional Engineer licensure/Engineer Intern certification is not required but is considered an asset
