Scientist II Biochemist - Structural Biologist YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The primary responsibilities of this role, Scientist II Biochemist – Structural Biologist, are: Determines experimental structures using either X-ray protein crystallography phasing or cryo-electron microscopy; Performs established assays and develops new assays to gain insights into mechanism using spectrophotometry and fluorescence; Develops purification methods for novel protein targets for structure and function studies; Designs protein expression constructs of both soluble and membrane proteins in bacterial and eukaryotic hosts; Performs protein crystallization and optimization and/or vitrification using manual plunge freezing; Develops, implements, tests and validates methods to identify protein:protein interactions; Conducts research and contributes to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, and/or trade secrets; Independently analyzes and interprets data and correlates with published findings if available; Keeps detailed documentation of experimental designs, results, and conclusions and clearly communicates and presents findings to colleagues and broadly to the organization; Keeps abreast of new science and technological developments and exploits them to continuously improve functional area capabilities; Demonstrates a sustained high level of technical skill and achievement; Fosters team-based approach to research; Contributes to workspace maintenance and upgrades. WHO YOU ARE Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our values More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: Required Qualifications: PhD OR Master’s degree OR Bachelor’s degree; Prior experience in protein science including developing, completing and analyzing protein purification and characterization methods; Proven track record of excellence with incremental demarcated successes with each step in career as demonstrated in peer reviewed publications, grants, invention disclosures, patents, awards, honors, and/or recognition by scientific community; Ability to see not only the intricate details of the experiment, but also keep in mind the overarching long-term vision and ability to utilize that to guide daily experiments; Demonstrated ability to work independently, to work collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams, and to lead when required to effectively achieve goals; Ability to travel domestically independently up to 5%. Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cell Biology, Biophysics, Biology or closely related life sciences area; Five or more years of relevant experience (includes both academic and industrial experience post undergraduate); Proven track record of leading independent research efforts as evidenced by contributions to scientific field through peer reviewed publications, book chapters and/or grants; In depth knowledge of structural biology such as: Prior experience in X-ray protein crystallography including construct design, surface entropy reduction mutagenesis, expression and protein purification, crystallization/optimization, structure determination using experimental phasing methods, and refinement; Prior experience with cryo-electron microscopy including plunge freezing, data collection/processing for single particle analysis, and/or cryo-electron tomography. Experience with mechanistic analysis including demonstrated functional protein characterization through established assays, developing new assays to assess function such as kinetic analyses, transport activity assays (influx/efflux), patch clamping, surface plasmon resonance and biolayer interferometry; Experience with biophysical characterizations including dynamic light scatter, analytical ultracentrifugation and polydispersity; Expertise with membrane protein solubilization from native sources maintaining native lipid environments to preserve function; Receptor identification and characterization of protein:protein or protein:ligand interactions; Linux coding experience including shell and Python scripting and CPU/GPU data processing.
