THE THERAPIST – Memoir Consideration Pitch
By Lawrence Jacob
After the death of his mother at twelve, a boy is sent to therapy to help him cope. The sessions end prematurely, leaving his grief unresolved and unnamed. What follows is a lifetime shaped not by recovery, but by endurance.
As the boy becomes a man, loss repeats itself:
The death of a brother
The loss of a first wife following a cancer misdiagnosis
Becoming a single father to a three-year-old daughter
A second marriage that produces four children and eventually ends in divorce
Anxiety and addiction emerge as adaptations to grief that was never fully processed. Strong faith in God provides resilience, but life’s challenges continue, including personal health issues and medical misdiagnoses, culminating in the belief that it may be “his time to die.”
In midlife, a series of events leads him back to the therapist he first saw as a child. Their renewed sessions become the emotional heart of the memoir, confronting the trauma he never fully faced and revealing that he was never truly lost—only waiting to be found.
This memoir is for anyone who has lived through loss, anxiety, or trauma—and is still here, seeking understanding and hope.
