Job: Media Insights Journalist (Contract)
Remote, part-time
Better Leaders Lab
About Better Leaders Lab
Better Leaders Lab is a Do and Think Tank for good leadership and smart management in media and beyond, and a boutique strategic advisory firm. We work with senior media leaders, boards, and executive programs on strategy, leadership, and how AI is reshaping organizations. Most of our work sits at the intersection of journalism, media business, and leadership.
Founded in Vienna in 2023, BLL operates fully remote. We are a small, trusted, distributed team of experienced, independent media experts that values clarity, diligence, and thoughtful collaboration.
About the role
Better Leaders Lab is looking for an experienced Media Insights Journalist to join us on a part-time, long-term contractor basis.
This role is for a journalist who enjoys making sense of what is happening across the media industry and helping others think more clearly about it. You will scan reports, coverage, numbers, and conversations and turn them into short, sharp insights for lectures, board meetings, best practice case studies and executive programs.
This is fast, practical work. It is closer to online journalism and desk work than to academic research. The focus is on accuracy, relevance, and bite-size facts and numbers that senior audiences can trust.
A core part of the role is using Gen AI tools to work through large amounts of information quickly and carefully. AI is used as a value add, not a shortcut. Accuracy, judgment, and transparency matter. We care deeply about responsible and ethical use of AI and expect the same mindset in this role.
You will work closely with the CEO while operating very independently. Most collaboration happens asynchronously and in writing.
Most of our work is focused on media and leadership contexts in Europe and the U.S. Familiarity with these markets and their media landscapes is important, and candidates based in Europe or the Americas, and with strong professional exposure to these regions, will feel most at home in this role.
A note on authorship and credit
This role is about influence and insights, not bylines. Most of the work will not result in published articles under your name. Instead, your insights and writing will shape slide decks, briefing notes, teaching materials, and board-level conversations.
We are looking for someone who enjoys writing as a craft and a tool for thinking, not as a beauty contest or a vehicle for personal visibility. If you take pride in seeing your work sharpen ideas, inform decisions, and elevate conversations as part of a team, this role will feel rewarding.
What a day might look like
No two days are the same, but typical assignments include:
● Scanning an industry report with the help of Gen AI and surfacing the few numbers and shifts that actually matter
● Looking at how a media company or market has evolved over time and explaining what changed and why it matters now
● Preparing a short orientation brief on a journalism startup ahead of a board meeting ● Factchecking a media companies’ operating results with online research and direct outreach
● Turning a long report or complex dataset into a one-page note with clean facts, key numbers, and clear takeaways
● Pulling together small sets of examples or quotes via short interviews that bring discussions and best practices to life
Most tasks start with a question or a problem to solve, not a checklist.
What we are looking for
This role is a strong fit if you are:
● An experienced freelance reporter, journalist, or analyst with business & media industry acumen
● Knowledgeable and curious about media business, strategy, leadership, and how organizations really work
● Someone who values careful, diligent work and takes pride in getting facts and numbers right
● Fluent in using Gen AI tools to scan, compare, and synthesize large amounts of information
● Thoughtful and ethical in how you use AI, with a clear sense of its limits and risks ● Willing to learn, refine, and improve your workflows over time
● Able to work fast without being sloppy and to name uncertainty where it exists ● Comfortable working independently while being part of a small, trusted team ● A clear, concise writer who knows how to write for senior audiences
English must be excellent, both spoken and written.
German is a plus but not required.
How we work together
You will report closely to the CEO and collaborate on preparation for teaching, board work, and strategic conversations. At the same time, this role requires a high degree of independence. From time to time, you’ll collaborate with the rest of the BLL team to factcheck slides, prepare documents or verify content for case studies.
Most work is asynchronous. Briefs and updates are shared in writing, with short check-ins as needed. What matters is quality, clarity, and reliability, not fixed working hours.
This role is well suited to someone who values belonging, wants a stable anchor client, and still appreciates the flexibility of freelance work.
Contract structure and compensation
This role is structured as an ongoing retainer.
● One day per week on average
● Day rate: 320 EUR
● Monthly retainer: approx. 1,280 EUR
Work is fully remote and flexible, with some overlap during CET or ET working hours when needed.
The role starts with a 2-month trial period. If all goes well, the contract will be extended on a long-term basis through the end of 2026. This is designed to be a stable, ongoing collaboration, not a short-term project.
This is a contractor position and does not include benefits or insurance. How to apply
Please apply via this Typeform: [click apply]
Your application should include:
● Your CV or resume
● A short note explaining why this role appeals to you and how you use GenAI in your work
● One short example of analytical or journalistic work on media, journalism, innovation, business transformation, or the future of work that you are proud of (published or unpublished)
