Lead Tech Developer – Automation & Workflow Engineering
Who This Role Is NOT For
This role is not for someone who only “clicks buttons” in automation tools or follows step-by-step instructions. This is a deeply technical, hands-on engineering role.
But if you love designing complex workflows, solving tough automation challenges, mentoring junior developers, and integrating AI agents into real business processes—you’ll thrive here.
Who We Are
The Systems Boss is an operations agency that helps small- to medium-sized companies across a variety of industries save time, increase profitability, and improve team productivity through advanced systems and automation.
We implement CRMs, project management tools, and custom automations—often connecting multiple platforms and AI technologies—to help clients streamline operations, cut inefficiencies, and scale their businesses.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Lead Tech Developer/Senior Developer who can design, engineer, and implement complex workflows across multiple automation platforms. You’ll be responsible for building advanced solutions for clients, mentoring junior developers, and helping integrate AI-driven automation where appropriate.
This is a part-time role (10–20 hours/week) with high autonomy, ownership, and opportunity to influence how our systems and automations are built and scaled. This role is expected to grow to full-time over the coming year.
Responsibilities
Advanced Workflow Engineering
• Design and architect complex multi-step workflows across platforms including n8n, Make, Zapier, and Superbase
• Work with APIs, JSON, arrays, and data structures to connect multiple systems
• Use Postman and other tools to test and debug APIs
• Incorporate AI agents into workflows to solve business problems and improve efficiency
• Develop solutions that are robust, scalable, and maintainable
Build & Implementation
• Distill business problems into automated solutions
• Take workflow designs from concept to production-level implementation
• Configure, troubleshoot, and optimize automations across multiple tools
• Ensure integrations work seamlessly and reliably for clients
• Build reusable components, templates, and standardized solutions for efficiency
Mentorship & Training
• Guide, mentor, and train junior developers on software and technical best practices
• Review their workflows, automations, and code for quality and reliability
• Develop internal documentation and training materials for complex workflows
Collaboration & Client Delivery
• Partner with Account Managers/Delivery Lead to understand client needs and translate them into technical requirements
• QA, test, and launch systems that meet client expectations
• Provide technical guidance on feasibility, best practices, and potential AI integration
• Attend client onboarding calls and mapping calls for more complex builds, providing technical guidance and workflow mapping in real time with the Delivery Lead/Account Manager
What You’re Accountable For
• Designing and building highly technical, reliable workflows
• Creating scalable, reusable automation solutions
• Training and mentoring junior developers to elevate team capability
• Ensuring integrations and automations function flawlessly in production
• Staying ahead of automation, workflow, and AI trends to continuously improve client solutions
Experience Requirements
Required
• Expert knowledge of n8n, Make, Zapier, and Superbase
• Strong understanding of APIs, JSON, arrays, and workflow engineering
• Experience with Postman or similar API testing tools
• Proven ability to architect and implement complex automation workflows
• Experience mentoring or leading technical teams
• Familiarity with incorporating AI agents into workflows
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ownership mindset
• Experience with CRMs, project management tools, or other business systems (ClickUp, Monday.com, GoHighLevel, HubSpot, etc.)
• Familiarity with scripting languages (JavaScript, Python, etc.)
• Agency or client-facing implementation experience
Who Thrives Here
You’ll excel in this role if you:
• Love deep technical problem-solving and building from scratch
• Think in terms of systems, APIs, and integrations
• Enjoy mentoring others and raising the bar for technical excellence
• Want autonomy to design workflows that push the limits of automation
